THE Church of " St Mary the Virgin and St Michael," Urswick (for it probably has a double dedication) is situate a little to the west of three miles due south of Ulverston, and the railway station nearest to it is Lindal on the Furness line. The Parish, as appears by a Terrier of 1778, consists of "Five 'Villages' viz. Great Urswick, Little Urswick, Bardsea, Stenton and Adgarley cum Beckside." The Church appears to have certainly existed when the Monks of Savigny were at Tulketh prior to their removal to Furness in 11 27, and Pope Celestine specially confirms the Church to the Convent of Furness in 1195, and at a little earlier date the Church of Urswick was given to Daniel son of Michael-le-Fleming [see Furness Coiicher Book, Chetham Society, pp. 74, 455, 643]. This is not the place to discuss the interesting antiquarian remains to be seen in and near Urswick, but a reference to the recent publication of the Cumberland and Westmor- land Antiquarian Society will reveal much of great interest. The Register here printed is the earliest and was described in 1833 as "defaced and illegible." The transcriber has however experienced very little difficulty and his only disappointment has been inability to make any sense of the words printed on p. 62. The original Register consists (inclusive of the cover which is written on and forms the folding cover of the Volume) of 56 parchment leaves. Such Episcopal Transcripts as exist for the period of this Volume have been, through the courtesy of Mr W. H. Satterthwaite, examined, and any addition to or variation from the printed Text noted. And the Vicar of Urswick, Rev. T. N. Postlethwaite, has been most kind in help and encouragement in producing the Volume.
